Dimensions have not changed, and the standard sizes were called, and linen labeled, "twin" and "full" or "double." Queen size, very close to UK king, has mostly supplanted the double bed since then. Quilts and comforters are sold as "full or queen" (but sheets are specific to the mattress size.) American king size beds are what everybody who shares a bed would prefer; they are common now. 50 years ago, cotton sheets were either Muslin or Percale. Muslin was cheap, a bit rough, and mushy. Percale was smooth and crisp. Today the luxury sheet is all about high thread count, and such linen is anything but crisp. I wish percale sheets were still available.2harborviewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05515808919694106225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28787909.post-85467774243216435442014-12-14T12:02:51.987+00:002014-12-14T12:02:51.987+00:00Phil Hawkins

We finally found one at Ikea (Superking) which had to be built upstairs (two single beds bracketed together). Five hours later (!) it is usable, but six inches too short. We are coping. It also entirely fills the bedroom and we have to squeeze around it. (Sigh.) Would just like to note that, yes,...American here. Would just like to note that, yes, as Lynne says, twin is a bed size and does not imply that it is one of a pair here in the U.S. And twin size beds with more than one in a room is a rarity in my experience. Hotel rooms with more than one bed have two double (full size) beds or two queen size beds. Dorm rooms have two single beds, but, as noted, they are usually twin XL rather than standard twin.

I personally would take double bed to mean the same as full size bed, to specify that specific size. Except maybe in specific contexts where one might expect a double bed to be smaller (like in a trailer).EKnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28787909.post-45969775965101667362012-07-23T15:49:41.450+01:002012-07-23T15:49:41.450+01:00Are Californians really taller?
