In general, the term road is found much more often for street names in towns in the UK than it is in the US, where it tends to be reserved for either country roads or sometimes biggish thoroughfares in cities (e.g. Rochester, NY has a Winton Road within the city, but I don't think there are any streets named road within the village limits of my hometown).
This led me to create a new joke:
-Why did the chicken cross the street? You're not going to tell me that jokes have to be funny, are you?
-Because she lived in town.
